"Body Tag
The body tag (or body plate) is a data plate that is screwed on to the cross member above the radiator. The tag is painted in the same color as the body. A sample of a body tag can seen in the picture below.
The tag is quite important because it can provide you with some interesting details about your car. Using the information on this page you should be able to read and interpret the data on the body tag of your W126.
The production number (1)
The production number consists of two parts in the format abbbbbb where a is the year code that designates in what year the car was produced. The bbbbbb is the consecutive build number. The year code is a single digit code that rotates once every five years. There are two ranges, one for the Bremen plant ( 0 - 4) and one for the Sindelfingen plant (5 - 9).
The ranges are:
Year Sindelfingen Bremen
1980 5 0
1981 6 1
1982 7 2
1983 8 3
1984 9 4
1985 5 0
1986 6 1
1987 7 2
1988 8 3
1989 9 4
1990 5 0
1991 6 1
The model designation (2)
The model designation shows some additional chassis info in the following format 111 233 45:
111 is the chassisnumber (in our case always 126)
2 is the fuel designation (0 is gasoline, 1 is diesel)
33 is the modelnumber (for example 37, the 500SEL)
4 is the steering type (1 is LH drive, 2 is RH drive)
5 is the transmission type (0 is standard transmission, 2 is automatic transmission)
An example:
A 500SEL with number 12603712:
126 is the chassisnumber, 0 is gasoline, 37 is a 500SEL, 1 is LH-Drive, 2 is automatic transmission.
The color codes (3 and 5)
This code designates the three-digit body color code or the three-digit upholstery code.
For example 877 is blue green (or 'petrol' in German). The body color code is usually followed by a single letter M or F designating metallic (M) paint or standard (F) paint.
The engine variant number (4)
This number designates the engine variant installed in this particular car. Engine numbers are coded as 111 222 where 111 is the main engine number and 222 is the engine variant. More information on engine designations can be find in the 'facts' chapter.
The option codes (6)
These three digit numbers designate several non standard options that are available on this car. More information about decoding the option codes can be found in the 'accessories' chapter.
Chassisnumbers explained
The W126 chassisnumber layout has changed a couple of times during it's lifetime. We will explain the different formats below:
The 1979 - August 1, 1983 version:
WDB 126 233 4 5 666666
2 is the fuel designation (0 is gasoline, 1 is diesel)
33 is the modelnumber (for example 37, the 500SEL)
4 is the steering type (1 is LH drive, 2 is RH drive)
5 is the transmission type (0 is standard transmission, 2 is automatic transmission)
666666 is the buildnumber
The august 1, 1983 to 1985 version:
WDB 126 233 4 A 555555

33 is the modelnumber (for example 37, the 500SEL)
4 is the steering type (1 is LH drive, 2 is RH drive)
A is the manufacturing plant (A to E is Sindelfingen, F to H is Bremen)
666666 is the buildnumber
The 1985 - 1991 version:
WDB AB11 C 2 D E 333333
B designates fuel type (A is gasoline, B is diesel)
11 is the modelnumber (for example 37, the 500SEL)
C is the restraint system used on the car.
2 is a check digit
D is the registration year
